I grew up with two brothers. I was a tom-boy forever. I played sports my whole life. I’ve always had more guy friends than girl friends. Any “future baby” names I came up with were always for boys. Yet somehow, for some reason, from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I wished for a girl. I’m really not sure why, but I try to reason that I wanted to move outside my comfort zone and experience something completely new…as if becoming a parent isn’t new enough.

Waiting for the twenty week mark was excruciating. My mind raced (as I think all pregnant women experience) as I envisioned what it would be like to have either gender, and I couldn’t wait to begin DECORATING! (I mean bonding) But really, decorating. And buying clothes. When we switched doctors and she moved the due date back 9 days, I knew this meant a longer wait.

Somehow, the day came. I was a nervous wreck just hoping that everything looked good on the ultrasound health-wise, that they would be able to determine the sex, and finally, that the secret would be kept until reveal time!

How wonderful is it to have an associate wedding photographer who doubles as amazing maternity/baby/family photographer and just an amazing person? It is very wonderful. I found this idea on Pinterest of course and knew Whitney would be able to pull it off. I sent her the picture, and she was immediately in.

After teaching our very helpful ultrasound tech how to text on my iPhone, she gladly texted Whitney the fated gender. From that moment, I was in pure excitement mode. For those of you who wonder if it’s really that important to shoot during that couple hours before sunset, here is your answer. The text was sent to Whitney around 11am, and we didn’t open the trunk until about 6pm! Talk about dedication

Whitney handled it all. She called the party store and got the balloons. She picked up the trunk from the antique shop. She even called Chad’s step-dad to help surprise Chad’s mom with a cake version of her own reveal. Whitney–THANK YOU!

Chad and I killed some time eating dinner with my mom and brother before heading to Whitney’s house. The rest is a bit of a blur. I first saw a purple balloon, which I think momentarily confused me. Then it hit me. I don’t think I spoke for a solid minute. Then came some tears. There have been a lot of those lately! Chad wanted a boy, but I couldn’t help but see his face light up with the excitement of finally knowing. (Side note: he took the lead the next day picking out dresses during our shopping spree!) I can’t wait to see Chad fall in love with this little girl. I think I am looking forward to this the most.

I knew Whitney would do a great job, but man did she blow me away. I was in tears again the next morning at the sight of her blog post. She captured everything…the anticipation, the shock, the smiles, and the tears. Whitney, thank you for this memory!

Raleigh Engagement: Kelly + Kevin

Kelly & Kevin’s lives both led them from their home state, Michigan, to where they met and currently reside in Raleigh, NC. Chad and I were excited to head west off the beach for a weekend to shoot their engagement session with a little more of a downtown feel. There were a few glitches in plans as a BBQ festival threatened to clutter the streets and rain poured just a few hours before our shoot, but everything turned out perfectly. The people scattered, and the rain disappeared just in time. We had a great time wandering the streets with these two, stopping wherever we saw fit. Who would have thought that you’d be able to find awesome train tracks, killer brick walls, and a beautiful green park all within a few blocks? Raleigh is pretty awesome. Kelly & Kevin, we’ll see you guys this fall for your wedding at Pelican’s Landing in Corlolla! Enjoy

Ocracoke Engagement: Jaclyn + Mark

We met with Jaclyn & Mark a couple weeks ago and instantly clicked. Their July wedding at a Duck event home sounds awesome, and we’re pumped to be a part of a great group of vendors including Rachel Moser of 11th Hour Events. When Jaclyn told us their plans to go horseback riding, I instantly wanted to incorporate that into their engagement session. We roamed around Ocracoke and snagged a few of them leaving for their beach ride. We’ll see you guys in July!

Kristen & Ryan met at a river and a few years later, they were married by the ocean. This past Saturday was absolutely beautiful. A perfect spring day at the Hilton Pier House was a great way to start our season, not to mention the beautiful flowers from Bells & Whistles and some key lime bliss cake from Great Cakes! Congrats & enjoy!

Outer Banks Engagement: Johanna & John, Till Death Do Us Part

Whitney will be shooting Johanna & John’s wedding this May and met up with them at an unusual location for their engagement session. When I first heard about their idea, I thought, “Wow, I can’t wait to see these pictures.” Well, Whitney did not disappoint in making this “‘Till Death do us Part” theme a reality. The Nags Head Woods provided the perfect backdrop. Congrats guys & enjoy! We’ll see you again in May

Andrew met Fontane their freshman year at Duke, and I can only imagine that he’s looked at her with those eyes since Day 1. Complete adoration. Fontane–you are stunning! They have endured 2+ years of their long distance relationship after graduating, but act as if the distance between Raleigh and Toronto is nothing for their love to withstand. I believe them, and we can’t wait for their wedding this October. Congrats & enjoy!

Whitney Norko’s Spring Mini Sessions – Behind the Scenes & My Experience

If you didn’t know already, our associate wedding photographer Whitney Norko is an amazing maternity/newborn/child photographer here on the Outer Banks. Whitney has the reputation of making women want to have babies strictly so that they can be photographed by her…I am proof that this is not a rumor This past weekend, I had the pleasure of assisting her with her spring mini sessions. Whitney orchestrated a magical setup packed full of flower fields, vintage props, and of course baby ducks & chicks! Everything looked perfect, and the baby animals were a hit with the all of the kids.

As I was thrown into Whitney’s world for a weekend, I couldn’t help but think of all the exciting things to come for Chad and I and this thing inside of me that is making what stomach muscles I have disappear. I think what I’m looking forward to most is being forced to stop and really appreciate life in its simplest form with all of its simplest beauties that we adults pass right by day after day. Even only 4 months into my pregnancy, I already feel a new sense of purpose.

I had time to grab a few behind the scenes photos of Whitney in action on day 1, and it was such a joy. She just has that natural ability to make kids and adults alike feel at ease in front of her camera. I can’t wait to see all of her weddings this year.
